For my final project I decided to combine an assemblage with clay figures. The ‘cabinet’ I used is a Polish Box that was made in Poland. My grandparents were Holocaust survivors and had to flee Poland after the war. They came through Ellis Island so to represent that I made the Statue of Liberty on the Island that it sits on. My grandpa survived partly due to the fact that he was a Taylor so he was useful which is why I made a sewing machine. I also added his thimble and Taylor tag from when he moved to CT and opened his own business. He taught me how to sew as a child so it was a big part of my life and the reason I am here since it’s why he survived. I added my grandmas cross, heart necklace and little sheep because she always had chachkis like this laying around. Religion was also very important to both my grandparents and my grandpa took me to church every Sunday. I added a Pierogi because I used to make them with my grandma and I grew up on a lot of Polish food. I added a dove because my grandparents taught me hope and I know that nothing that I will go through will be as hard as what they went through. The egg is to resemble Polish Easter and polish wooden eggs because that’s one of the biggest holidays we celebrated. Lastly, the candy and little box is from Krakow and I thought they were pretty and added contrast to the leather wallet my grandpa made and always used.

I really love this project and the backstory behind it. It’s mind blowing to think Holocaust was really not that long ago and I feel like your project says a lot about how you have grown up.
I really love this piece! It seems very familiar to me since my dad is also a tailor and his thimbles and tailor tags are always laying around our house and I would play with them when I was younger. Its crazy to think about how your grandfather’s profession is what kept him alive
